Sweet potato dog treats are nutritious and delicious treats for dogs. If you want to make some healthy dog treats for your pup, think about making dog treats with sweet potatoes.

These sweet potato dog treats are easy to make and delicious!

These treats are worth 5 stars (or 2 paws up) and your dog will love them. In this how to, you will learn how to bake up two easy to create sweet potato dog treats that your dog will absolutely love. Both recipe options take just a few minutes of prep time, and both are delicious options.

Is Sweet Potato Safe For Dogs?

It sure is. Sweet potatoes can be a great supplement to your dog’s daily diet. There are a few things to keep in mind though. For one, if your dog is overweight or has diabetes, you’ll need to limit the amount of sweet potato that you give them, since sweet potatoes are starchy and higher in natural sugars.

Second, don’t ever feed your dog raw sweet potato. Before treating your pup, you’ll need to peel and cook the sweet potato.

Besides these two cautions, sweet potatoes are a wonderful source of vitamins and minerals for your dog. They are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Manganese, Copper, and Potassium. Plus, they’re high in fiber, and low in fat, so they’re great in moderation.

How To Prep Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Dehydrated Version)

This is the easiest recipe for sweet potato dog treats. All you need is one ingredient: sweet potatoes! You’ll also need a dehydrator.

Here’s all that you’ll need for your dehydrated sweet potato dog treats:

Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Dehydrated Chews Version) Instructions

Now that you have your ingredients and tools ready, you can whip up some easy-to-make treats. The prep time for these sweet potato treats is less than 10 minutes, and all you really have to do is allow them time to dry out for a total cook time of under 4 hours. Keep in mind that cooking time may vary based on the size of your treats and if you’re using a dehydrator, but more on that in the recipe.

1-Preheat Oven/Prepare Your Dehydrator

If using an oven, preheat to 250F (130C). If using your dehydrator, follow the manual’s instructions. No matter which option you choose, you should line your trays or dehydrator trays with parchment paper for easy clean-up and to avoid sticking.

2 – Slice Your Sweet Potatoes

One sweet potato will make around 15-20 sweet potato treats. You can use that estimate to decide how many treats you want to make. You can use a knife, but a mandolin will be easier and allow more uniformity in your slices.

You can slice in coin shape, or if you have a larger dog or want them to chew the sweet potato longer, you can also slice them lengthwise into longer strips. No matter what, keep them to about 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.

3- Spread Them Out

If using your oven, spread out the treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet, making sure that they are in a single layer. If using a dehydrator, follow the same method with the dehydrator trays.

4 – Bake & Cool

You’ll want to bake these treats for about 2 to 3 1/2 hours, flipping them once halfway through. You want them to be completely dried out. Depending on how thick you sliced them, you may have slightly chewy treats, which is okay as long as they’re dry.

Let them cool completely before you serve them. The treats will keep in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. You can also smear them with some peanut butter or melted carob before serving.

How To Make Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Dog Bone Version)

These treats are still super easy to make and are homemade dog treats that you can have a little fun with. You’ll need a few more ingredients, and more time but the total time for these treats is still under 2 hours.

Here’s all that you’ll need for your treats:

  • 1/4 Cup Mashed Sweet Potatoes
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 TBSP Peanut Butter (make sure to choose a peanut butter without xylitol)
  • 2 Cups Flour (whole wheat flour works best, but can be substituted for all purpose flour, oat, or brown rice flour. Adjust ratios accordingly.)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • Cinnamon (optional, just a sprinkle)

You’ll also need a large bowl, a whisk, and a rubber spatula.

Sweet Potato Dog Treats Instructions

Once all of your ingredients are laid out, you are ready to make your sweet potato and peanut butter dog treats!

1-Preheat Your Oven

Preheat your oven to 350F (175C).

2 – Mix Your Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix together all of the ingredients, including flour, eggs, mashed sweet potato, peanut butter, and salt. Once the ingredients are mixed together, slowly add cold water. You want the dough to be slightly dry and easy to roll out. Knead the dough together until it’s uniform.

3- Cut Out Your Treats

Once mixed, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick. From here, you can cut the treats with your favorite cookie cutter. This recipe yields about a dozen treats, but depending on your cookie cutter, you may get a few more or a few less. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired.

4 – Bake & Cool

After cutting, transfer your treats to a parchment-lined sheet. Bake them for about 35 minutes, or until nice and crunchy. You can also dehydrate them after baking to make sure that they’ll store.

Let them cool completely, and then transfer them to an airtight container. If your dog loves them, you can also make this recipe in larger batches and freeze them.

Can You Double Either Recipe?

You can double or even triple each recipe if you have multiple dogs. Just keep in mind the storage time.

You Can Freeze The Treat Dough

If you don’t plan on making or giving out the baked goodies, you can freeze the pre-made dough. All you need to do is form a tube of dough, wrap it in plastic wrap, and wrap again in foil. Don’t forget to name and date the dough. You can also freeze in airtight containers, but still wrap them in plastic wrap.

You can freeze the dough for up to 6 months. But to keep them as fresh as possible, try to use them within 3 months.
