Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Cooling rack
  • Rolling Pin
  • Whisk
  • Doggie cookie cutters (optional)
  • Dehydrator
  • Knife or Mandolin
  • Potato Peeler
  • Rubber Spatula

Ingredients

Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Dehydrated Chews Version)

  • 1 Sweet Potato

Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Dog Bone Version)

  • 1/4 cup Mashed Sweet Potatoes
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tbsp Peanut Butter
  • 2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • Cinnamon (to taste)

Instructions

Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Dehydrated Chews Version)

  • If using an oven, preheat to 250F (130C). If using your dehydrator, follow the manuals instructions. No matter which option you choose, you should to line your trays or dehydrator trays with parchment paper for easy clean-up and to avoid sticking.
  • One sweet potato will make around 15-20 sweet potato treats. You can use that estimate to decide how many treats you want to make. You can use a knife, but a mandolin will be easier and allow more uniformity in your slices.
You can slice in coin shape, or if you have a larger dog or want them to chew the sweet potato longer, you can also slice them lengthwise into longer strips. No matter what, keep them to about 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.
  • Once the dough is thick and crumbly, add the water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough can form into a large ball.
  • If using your oven, spread out the treats on a parchment lined baking sheet, making sure that they are in a single layer. If using a dehydrator, follow the same method with the dehydrator trays.
  • You'll want to bake these treats for about 2 to 3 1/2 hours, flipping them once halfway through. You want them to be completely dried out. Depending on how thick you sliced them, you may have slightly chewy treats, which is okay as long as they're dry.
  • Let them cool completely before you serve them. The treats will keep in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. You can also smear them with some peanut butter or melted carob before serving.

Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Dog Bone Version)

  • Preheat your oven to 350F (175C).
  • In a large bowl, mix together all of the ingredients, including the flour, eggs, mashed sweet potato, peanut butter, and salt. Once the ingredients are mixed together, slowly add cold water. You want the dough to be slightly dry and easy to roll out. Knead the dough together until it's uniform.
  • Once mixed, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick. From here, you can cut the treats with your favorite cookie cutter. This recipe yields about a dozen treats, but depending on your cookie cutter, you may get a few more or a few less. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired.
  • After cutting, transfer your treats to a parchment lined sheet. Bake them for about 35 minutes, or until nice and crunchy. You can also dehydrate them after baking to make sure that they'll store.
  • Let them cool completely, and then transfer them to an airtight container. If your dog loves them, you can also make this recipe in larger batches and freeze them.

Notes

Can You Double Either Recipe?

You can double or even triple each recipe if you have multiple dogs. Just keep in mind the storage time.

You Can Freeze The Treats

If you don't plan on making or giving out the baked goodies, you can freeze the pre-made dough. All you need to do is form a tube of dough, wrap it in plastic wrap, and wrap again in foil. Don't forget to name and date the dough. You can also freeze in airtight containers, but still wrap them in plastic wrap.
You can freeze the dough for up to 6 months. But to keep them as fresh as possible, try to use within 3 months.
